A Citizen Science Project!

Barnes Preserve has welcomed visitors for many years, but we have never surveyed how many people actually use the park. Having a good estimate of usage can be very helpful  when applying for grants, or donations from foundations. We know that the park is well utilized but it would be helpful to have some numbers to quote.

We will be gathering visitor data on July 25- August 2. For each of the nine days, the number of users will be tallied during one-hour volunteer- selected time blocks in the AM and PM. The data will be analyzed by a professional statistician to formulate general estimates of overall usage.

We need to have two volunteers – one counting at the pavilion, and the other at the hiker’s parking lot. We will be counting for nine days, with time slots that are only one hour long and can be chosen by the volunteer.  We will provide an easy-to-use tally sheet.

If you are willing to help, just click on the following link and choose a date, time and location. We will send you more specific sign up information closer to survey days.  The most important dates are the weekends – July 25, 26 and August 1,2.

The Barnes Preserve encompasses 76 acres and is the only Wayne County Park. It is located at 3396 Sylvan Rd., Wooster, Ohio, 1/4 mile south of the Secrest/Sylvan intersection. It is near the Wayne County Care Center and OARDC/Secrest Arboretum.
