This Instructor led hybrid course will help you build your knowledge of Ohio’s diverse ecology and natural resources, education techniques, field identification skills, and opportunities to contribute to scientific understanding and conservation through community science and land stewardship.   It will fulfill the 40 hour course requirement for the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist program.  

Format: The OCVN course in Franklin County will be divided into a series of sessions taught via live zooms, face to face meetings, one optional Sat. field day, and online modules.  The session topics include Ohio’s birds, geology, soils, forests, mammals, water resources, weather and climate and more.   The session leaders are Faculty and Staff of The Ohio State University along with professionals and other experts. 

Cost: $100.00 and includes manual, shirt, pin, and access to certification portal and online modules.

We ask that you miss no more than two required sessions. If you have schedule conflicts and will miss more than 2 sessions please plan to register for a future course. Pre-recorded Zooms from last year will possibly be available for missed sessions with instructor approval. 

Schedule Overview for planning (Please note: Schedule is subject to change and adjustments)

 Live Zoom sessions will take place primarily on Monday and Wednesday evenings between April 10, 2023—June 5, 2023 from 5:30—8:00 PM  and Tue May 30 5:30—8:00 PM and Thurs June 1 noon –1:30 PM. No classes May 8 or Memorial Day 29. There are some weekday sessions (see below under Face to Face Session Dates).

April 24, Mon. 5:30—8:00 PM Soils, OSU Extension Franklin County

April 29 Sat. (Optional Geology hike) 9:00 AM—1:00 PM  Highbanks Metro Park;

May 10 Wed. 5:30—8:30 PM Weather and Climate OSU Extension Franklin County - 

May 17 Wed. 5:30 –8:30 PM Birds, City of Columbus McKnight Outdoor Education Center, Ottawa Lodge

May 24 Wed 6:00—8:00 PM Insects, OSU Extension Franklin County
