Ohio Rocks! - A Guide to Geologic Sites in the Buckeye State

June 8, 2015

A new field guide has arrived at the Ohio Geological Survey. Ohio Rocks!—A Guide to Geologic Sites in the Buckeye State, by Albert Dickas (Mountain Press, 2015), offers a glimpse at 50 of the state's geologic wonders.

The book opens with a chapter on "Ohio's Geologic Heritage," which details how Ohio evolved from the time of the Precambrian up to the Ice Age and today. The geologic sites are organized into one of three physiographic regions: Lake Plain, Till Plains, and Appalachian Plateau. Dickas offers a brief description and explanation of the geology, including full-color maps, photos, and diagrams to further illustrate key concepts.

The selected sites include better known geologic wonders, such as Old Mans Cave and Ohio Caverns, to locations not so obvious to the untrained eye, including Bowling Green Fault and the Appalachian Escarpment. The book also features a handy glossary to further explain difficult terminology, a list of reading references, and an index.
